Film Honors: 2003

My own personal choices for the year. They reflect not just necessarily what I think is the best or essential cinema, but perhaps resonate with me or inspire, both at the time, and still today. Subject to alter choices if new viewings are worthy enough. Other published Film Honors posts can be found at the menu at the top of the page.

  1. I would add Gus Van Sant's Elephant. His style here of showing the same scene or time period from multiple points of view was something we rarely ever get to experience. The verite camera work and use of unknown actors added a layer of realism to an already terrifying experience. I'll admit to being one of the guilty ones who didn't see Elephant until a couple of years after its release, but I would now put it right up there with my other favourite of that year, Les invasions barbares.
